A new mother

Ok, so I'm not usually one that gets terribly excited about animals, birds, insects, etc. Typically, anything that has more legs than me, can fly, has scales or scurries (eeewwww!), is something I avoid at all costs. But apparently even I can be a sucker for nature at times....

Let me introduce you to the new living creatures that chose to inhabit a bush in our front yard. Let me just tell you how great it was to have something else to use to bribe my children. "Madison and Olivia...if you're good, mommy will take you out to see the bird eggs." Who would have thought there would be so much excitement over four, tiny, blue eggs?

Then, in an event that was practically poetic, these cute little birds hatched out of their shells first thing in the morning on Mother's Day. Can I get an "awwwww" anyone?

Every day, Madison and Olivia begged us to let them see the baby birds again and again. The momma bird would sit perched in a nearby tree chirping at us while we would take quick peeks, which always prompted Maddie to say, "I make momma bird NERVOUS!!!" You sure did, honey.

Just the other day, we came home to find that the baby birds were gone. Tears were shed, but the kids and I were happy to think of our feathered friends flying off towards fun new adventures. Steve, of course, commented that he thinks their incredibly quick departure had more to do with the food chain than with them taking flight, but what does the Ornithology studier know anyway?!?!?
